WHAT WE DO

Our primary function, in conjunction with the state and national organizations, is to actively lobby our local, state and federal elected representatives in order to obtain and secure benefits for all military personnel. To that end we have a Legislative Affairs Director who keeps the chapter apprised of legislative issues and guides and coordinates our efforts to effectively pursue our interests.
The Chapter also is involved in a number of community projects aimed at assisting military members and their families, fostering patriotism and developing leadership skills in young people.

We are voting members of the Veterans Council of Chatham County.  Currently, the chapter has volunteers in the Employer Support of Guard and Reserve (ESGR) who counsel Guard and Reserve members who are being mobilized or demobilized as to their rights and responsibilities concerning their civilian employment under the law. They also work with employers who have employees in the Guard and Reserve to build support and better relations.  SAMOA awards three scholarships annually to deserving ROTC cadets from local universities to help defray the costs of their education. The chapter also supports “Honor Flight Savannah”, sending WWII, Korean War and Vietnam Veterans to visit the memorial in Washington, DC.

The chapter conducts monthly business/social lunch meetings on the third Friday of each month.

Meetings are held at Carey Hilliad's banquet room at 11111 Abercorn St and offer opportunities to cover chapter business as well as fellowship among members and their spouses. The chapter has an Auxiliary for spouses which also meets monthly for lunch. Many of the chapter's meetings are devoted to special occasions or to honor members.  We hold a Christmas Dinner with our friends from the Military Order of the World Wars where we also collect toys for the Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program.

savmoa - savannah area military officers associationWe publish monthly an informative and professional newsletter, the "Sentinel," which keeps chapter members abreast of developments in the chapter's activities and issues as well as highlighting items on the national scene. The newsletter also informs members of the most current legislative and personal affairs issues. Information concerning personal finances is provided by experts.
